Sir Humphrey: "You're appalled? I'm appalled."
Bernard: "I'm appalled, too."
Hacker: "There's no doubt about it: it's appalling."
It's obvious why. The old Clinton-Haughey maxim that you CAN successfully lie to an electorate if you do it in a chirpy, cheery, jocular way, looks like it may get another confirmation.
Still, let's see, shall we?
The effort I put into filling in all those postal votes might pay off.

Looks like the unionists don't like it up em....well atleast most unionists, Rufus can speak for himself.
If the SNP win a majority (and I don't think they will), does that mean that scots have voted for defacto independence?
Isn't that what you've always argued?
No. Obviously.
Your reasoning?
SNP % of vote = ?
% of SNP vote actually wanting "independence" = ?
And, just to annoy you, turnout = ?
"It's obvious why. The old Clinton-Haughey maxim that you CAN successfully lie to an electorate if you do it in a chirpy, cheery, jocular way, looks like it may get another confirmation."
Sounds like John Major in 1992. Although his first confirmation was not even getting a majority of Tory MP votes in 1990 and Hezza and DH defaulting so they could get lucrative cabinet jobs.
SNP share, probably around 38-40% on both ballots.
% actually in favour of independence of SNP voters - around 55-66%.
Turnout - 50-55%.
Thatcher - between 42-43% of the vote at the most during her reign resulting in two massive majorities = wrecking ball economic policies that Michael Gove (!) was apologising for the other week = wrecked Scottish economy = rise in Scottish N/nationalism = decimation of Scottish Tories for past two decades.
Sure there is a mathematical formula somewhere.
Oh I kept meaning to ask about your comments on Salmond's weight. Surely if you dislike someone on the basis of their weight then I guess you would have voted for Clem in 45,50 and 51.
WC was not exactly svelt for the vast bulk (sic) of his life.
Perhaps it is hereditary. What about his grandson "Fatty" Soames. What did his girlfriend say again about a heavy cupboard with the key sticking out?!
Actually make that 35-40% on both ballots.
Amended formula vis a vis the developer of "Mr Whippy" ice cream
Thatcher - between 42-43% of the vote at the most during her reign resulting in two massive majorities = wrecking ball economic policies that Michael Gove (!) was apologising for the other week = wrecked Scottish economy = rise in Scottish N/nationalism = gradual decimation of Scottish Tories for past two decades + Scottish Home Rule + Rise in SNP.
"No. Obviously."
How terribly un-british of you.
I must say that it gives me great pleasure to see 'grumpy spindoctor' advertising Adidas trainers.
Oh how the might have fallen.
What next, Sm753 made a knight of the garter..... well he's got one bit of the outfit....
Please accept my sincere sympathies for your terrible loss.
My thoughts are with you, jenny and alan.
Nothing to say on the SNPs historic win?
Blah..part timer!
LOL, I'd be surprised if you show your face again on the Scotsman.
Unionism has made a complete dog of it.
What is it with unionists and incompetence?
By bye Bella.

Tee hee hee
My sincere commiserations Smee this must be awful for you.
I have felt no need to update the "Appalled" post, for obvious reasons.
But here's where we are:
Darth Vader has told Luke he's his father, after cutting his hand off. Han Solo has been frozen in carbonite and taken away.
Shelob has poisoned Frodo, Sam thought he was dead and took the Ring, while the orcs carried Frodo away.
From now on it gets better. Particularly as those factors called "arrogance" and "hubris" work their inevitable way...
This is NOT an ex-blog.
"This is NOT an ex-blog."
Oh Sm753, I'm afraid the curtain has went up and the lights are now on, it's over.
Summed up on newsnicht yesterday.
"...No good unionists in Scotland"
"...the intellectual rigour of unionism has been non existent"
"...Unionism is negative..."
May I suggest that you speak to AM2, join forces and setup an alternative blog to 'better nation', putting forward the positive message of your union before the SNP completely frame your whole argument.
Your problem is that your unionism is base don the past, it's based on conservatism and it's base don scotland bashing.
I can sense the good in you Darth, but I suspect that when we take off your helmet, all we're going to find is that your "more unionist than man....bitter and twisted"
PS The full fiscal autonomy bus is waiting, I've booked your seat, we can't wait forever Sm753.....
PPS Please pass on my condolences to Rufus, never in the field of human conflict, have so many owed so much to such a wee man.
Dearie me, unionists closing airbases.
Is there no end to your treachery?
Oh dear, your friend Alan Cochrane appears to have ruptured something over on the telegraph.
If only Am2 were here to lead you Sm753, you might have a chance.
I mean really, with a 'No' team consisting of raving home counties tories, David Cameron, Nick Clegg, John Redwood, Gordon Brown, Nick Griffin, Boris, Nigel Farage and other assorted buffoons, you've got every chance of success, arf arf arf
Go yersel bigman.
"We shall always be a small minority in the world, but, when a small nation accomplishes something with its limited means, what it achieves has an immense and exceptional value, like the widow's mite. . . . It is a deliberate and discerning love of a nation that appeals to me, not the indiscriminate love that assumes everything to be right because it bears a national label. . . . Love of one's own nation should not entail non-love of other nations. . . . Institutions by themselves are not enough."

"Salmond, Sturgeon, Swinney, MacAskill and Russell – much as I may disagree with their politics, and notwithstanding their many and varied errors in the last Parliament – have more talent, between just the five of them, than the whole Lab/Con/Lib contingent combined.
So the SNP deserves its absolute majority, and will continue to do so until such time as our strongest and most effective politicians of other persuasions choose to stay in Scotland and put themselves forwards for election to Holyrood.
I’m far from alone in issuing this warning, but if the unionist parties don’t heed it, the electorate will quickly perceive a democratic deficit which could perhaps be remedied by removing Westminster’s magnetic pull. And if the unionist parties can’t heed it, if their unwillingness or inability to do so is thought to be part and parcel of the Union, then such a judgment would be extremely hard to refute."

Oh dear Sm753, your looking like an incompetent narrow minded belly crawling sniveler.
Oh dear lord, now we have Mike Jackson, the reviled ex colonel in chief and arch tory claiming Scotland is 'too sma tae..." have an army.
Same old same old.
Meanwhile, whilst Wacko Jacko chunters his considerable chops over Scotlands disproportionate input in the British Armed Forces, Liam 'Foxy' Fox, the dark overlord of tory cutism, reviews the MoD post strategic review looking to find fresh cuts.

"....constitutional thinking has not developed evenly. A new fundamentalism has arisen in Scottish politics. Under devolution, unionist fundamentalism has replaced nationalist fundamentalism....This unionist fundamentalism is all about building barriers. Barriers between states and parties but most importantly barriers in the mind."

Oh dear Sm753, I think he's on to you.....
I see you remain speechless Smee.
The infrequency of the authors posts on this so called blog signals defeat and failure.
Sm753 RIP May 6th 2011
I doubt many will mourn.
