Uplifting thoughts

Blogging has clearly been light recently. The new occupation is fun, exciting and rewarding, but time- and energy-consuming. (No, I'm not going to say what it is. Some people would start hyperventilating. And with Scotland being such a small place, I'm not dropping any more hints about my real identity.)

Anyway, I just came across these uplifting thoughts in my reading:

"It is to the Union we owe our safety at home, and our consideration and dignity abroad. It is to that Union that we are chiefly indebted for whatever makes us most proud of our country. That Union we reached only by the discipline of our virtues in the severe school of adversity. It had its origin in the necessities of disordered finance, prostrate commerce, and ruined credit. Under its benign influences these great interests immediately awoke, as from the dead, and sprang forth with newness of life. Every year of its duration has teemed with fresh proofs of its utility and its blessings; it has been to us all a copious foundation of national , social and personal happiness.

"I have not allowed myself, Sir, to look beyond the Union, to see what might lie hidden in the dark recess behind. I have not coolly weighed the chances of preserving liberty when the bonds that unite us together shall be broken asunder. I have not accustomed myself to hang over the precipice of disunion to see whether, with my short sight, I can fathom the depth of the abyss below; nor could I regard him as a safe counsellor in the affairs of this Government, whose thoughts should be mainly bent on considering, not how the Union may be best preserved, but how tolerable might be the condition of the people when it should be broken up and destroyed.

While the Union lasts we have high, exciting, gratifying prospects spread out before us, for us and our children. Beyond that I seek not to penetrate the veil. God grant that in my day at lest that curtain may not rise! God grant that on my vision never may be opened what lies behind!

When my eyes shall be turned to behold for the last time the sun in heaven, may I not see him shining on the broken and dishonoured fragments of a once glorious Union; on states dissevered, discordant, belligerent; on a land rent with civil feuds, or drenched, it may be, in fraternal blood!

Let their last feeble and lingering glance rather behold the gorgeous ensign of the Kingdom, now known and honoured throughout the earth, still full high advanced, its arms and trophies streaming in their original lustre, not a cross erased, polluted or obscured, bearing for its motto no such miserable interrogatory as 'What is all this worth?' nor those other words of delusion and folly, 'Liberty from the Union,' but everywhere, spread all over in characters of living light, blazing on all its ample folds, as they float over the sea and over the land, and in every wind under the whole heavens, that other sentiment, dear to every true British heart - Liberty and Union, now and for ever, one and inseparable!"

I've changed a couple of words, but it pretty well sums things up, doesn't it?

A hearty round of applause for naming the original speaker.

We are not Americans our loyalty is to Queen and country

I, A.B. do truly and sincerely acknowledge, profess, testify, and declare in my conscience before God and the world, that our Sovereign Lord King James, is lawful and rightful King of this realm, and of all other in his Majesties Dominions and Countries; And that the Pope neither of himself, nor by any authorities of the Church or See of Rome, or by any means with any other hath any power or authority to depose the King, or to dispose any of his Majesty's kingdoms, or dominions, or to authorize any foreign prince to invade or annoy him, or his countries, or to discharge any of his Subjects of their allegiance and obedience to his Majesty, or to give any license or leave to any of them to bear arms, raise tumult, or to offer any violence, or hurt to his Majesty's royal person, state, or government, or to any of his Majesty's subjects within his Majesty's dominions. Also, I do swear from my heart that, notwithstanding any declaration or sentence of excommunication or deposition made or granted, or to be made or granted by the Pope or his successors, or by any authority derived, or pretended to be derived from him, or his See against the King, his heirs or successors, or any absolution of the said subjects from their obedience: I will bear faith and true allegiance to his Majesty, his heirs and successors, and him or them will defend to the uttermost of my power, against all conspiracies and attempts whatsoever, which shall be made against his or their persons, their crown and dignity, by reason or color of any such sentence or declaration or otherwise, and will doe my best endeavor to disclose and make known unto his Majesty, his heirs and successors, all treasons and traitorous conspiracies, which I shall know or hear of to be against him or any of them. And I do further swear, that I do from my heart abhor, detest and abjure, as impious and heretical, this damnable doctrine and position, that princes which be excommunicated or deprived by the Pope, may be deposed or murdered by their subjects, or any whatsoever. And I do believe and in conscience am resolved, that neither the Pope nor any person whatsoever, hath power to absolve me of this oath, or any part thereof, which I acknowledge by good and full authority to bee lawfully ministered unto me, and do renounce all pardons and dispensations to the contrary: And all these things I do plainly and sincerely acknowledge and swear, according to these express words by me spoken, and according to the plain and common sense and understanding of the same words, without any Equivocation, or mental evasion, or secret reservation whatsoever: And I doe make this recognition and acknowledgement heartily, willingly, and truly, upon the true faith of a Christian: So help me God

I've just changed a few words in your title.

Uplifting lies by a unionist of the UK.

Is there no length that you will sink to justify your selfish position.

No we're not American, but these words from 150 years ago aren't bad, are they?

Oh dear. Let's analyse your post.

"Uplifting lies by a unionist of the UK."

There seems to be a common Nat confusion between "things I disagree with" and "lies".

I've given the opinions of someone of 150 years ago, and stated my opinion that I find them relevant and accurate.

Where exactly is the "lie"?

"Is there no length that you will sink"

Actually one would tend to "sink" to a "depth", not a "length".

Why am I "sinking"? This is a pretty famous speech by a significant statesman (although I didn't know of it or him until yesterday).

" to justify your selfish position."

"Selfish"? I want what is demonstrably best for Scotland and the UK.

You're the one who has abandoned reason for madness.

You're the one who, because of whatever emotional insecurities you happen to be carrying around, has made the irrational decision to create an entirely unnecessary further distinction between "us" and "them" and call for the destruction of a successful nation-state.

The UNITED KINDOM isn't a 'nation-state'.

It's a 'UNITED KINDOM' of four nations.

Nevertheless, that's the closest you've come to admitting that your a british (little 'n')nationalist.

Only an tory imperialist would recoil to the term 'nation state' to defend the union, a term that is meaningless in an interdependent world.

Once again, unionism is revealed as narrow, confined and stifling thing by it's proponents.

Let my people go!

It's not really that hard a question is it, you just ggogle the first bit.

& Mr mixed up letters is entirely correct - we are not Americans something that David Cameron should learn unless he is to be a mere heir to Blair which I reckon he is.

& you are employed in the public sector now hence why you are a member of the union.

Congratulations parasite & potential ransomer of the nation.

That's lovely. It's a shame that the changing media of modern times means that people don't write paean-style things like this.

One of the qualities of the septics is there ability to produce highflown stuff like this. I suspect having a relatively positive and uncomplicated view of their own history helps - although of course whether that's accurate or not is up for debate.

As an older nation we necessarily have to take a more nuanced view: "Here is a statue of Charles I. And here's one of Cromwell. He did quite a lot for democracy, but isn't too popular in Ireland. Cough."

The French, Germans, Russians etc have it much worse, of course.

Dear Nationalist Myth buster,
As a matter a fact I am an American, and I think I know who you were quoting: was it Pres. Abe Lincoln?
I really enjoy your blog and agree with a good part of your logic.
I love learning about British history and culture, and it dishearens me to think of that great country losing its "united" or its "kingdom" and fading into oblivion.
Countless numbers of bold Scots fought for a united Britain, not because they were forced, but out of motived of pure patriotism.
Those who think otherwise should really do their homework.
It was a Scot who wrote "Rule Britannia!" after all!
I could go on and on, but I actually have a question to put to you: do ye tories have a song for yer party (like the celebrated "Scots Wha' Hae'" they use on the dark side")?
Please let me know at: campionsbrag@aol.com
God Bless and keep up the good work!

P.S. I think it would be inspirational if you ran an article about Bishop Alexander MacDonald of Upper Canada. He was truly a patriotic
Scot/Brit and the first Catholic Chaplain to serve in the British Army since the reformation.
If you want more information on him, I'd be happy to email it to you!
