Conflict of loyalty?

An intriguing thing arrived in the post this weekend - my first proper Trade Union membership pack.

For the first time in my life I am now "part of the Union" ('til the day I die, etc etc.) (Actually, I think I was technically an AUEW member for about two weeks in around 1989-90, the result of a summer job in a factory which was a closed shop. But that doesn't really count.)

Anyway, I've tucked the membership card in my wallet right next to my Scottish Conservative & Unionist card.

No signs yet of spontaneous combustion or adverse chain reactions, but I'm watching.

Ah the closed shop - 1989/90 must have been one of the last years they had them. There are still some old guys in my work who get all misty eyed about that, the days when taking yer union card off you meant that you could lose yer job.

Even I think that's a bit unfair:-)

I don't necessarily see any conflict between being a Tory & being in a union, unions are about higher wages & better working conditions, and they come in handy if you are treated unfairly. Employment lawyers cost an awful lot of money, better safe than sorry Smee.

Or can I call you comrade now?
