Scots in Cabinet

Excellent to see not only the young Danny Alexander as Scottish Secretary, but two favourites of mine making it into cabinet: the suave, saturnine Liam "Dr Foxy" Fox at Defence, and the cerebral and engaging Michael Gove at Education.

So at 3 out of 20-ish, Scotland yet again provides a greater than pro-rata share of the Cabinet.

Even when the Tory Party has only one seat in Scotland, and the Coalition together 12.

Come to think of it, it's hard to think of any points in the 1979-1997 Conservative cabinets when there were fewer than two Scottish cabinet members, and quite often there were up to four - think George Younger, Michael Ancram, Malcolm Rifkind, Ian Lang, Michael Forsyth, Norman Lamont, James Mackay, Teddy Taylor, and probably a few others I've forgotten.

Not bad for a party which some have called "anti-Scottish", is it?

Yes, it's a good mix and probably more proportionally equitable.

The whole 'anti-scottish tory' thing is infantile.

It's Time to talk things through, I'm sure Danny will agree that the Scottish office must delivery massive cuts in it's budget to tackle the deficit and that things like full trident renewal just 'winnae ding'.....

I'm sure you'd be reasonable too Sm753.....

You must be so excited at the prospect of Mr Gove visiting Scotland more often, he's such a nice man.

Teddy was never in the cabinet - he was in Thatcher's shadow cabinet as shadow Scottish Secretary before he got his P45 from the Glasgow electorate in 1979-----

And Ancram was only in the post-1997 shadow cabinet.

You forgot John McGregor and as a Tory how can you forget Willie?

Gove and Fox of course had to choose exile to get elected. Looking forward to Fox causing problems over the extension of devolution. He denounced Calman. Just when the SNP thought they had run out of useful Tory idiots one gets a big job in London------

A good reminder why we have the SNP was shown yesterday. Cameron installed an English MP (albeit Welsh-born) as Wales Secretary despite having 8 Tory MPs in the Principality. I am sure Cheryl Gillan is getting her colonial governor's feathery hat fitted at this very moment-----

We've only got one Scottish Tory MP and he isn't in the Cabinet. Danny Alexander is just a sop, the role of Scottish Secretary is pretty much redundant, as he argued before he took the position.

And how many Scots do you think would have voted Liberal Democrat in the realisation they were voting to support a Tory Govt?

No, this govt is not representative of Scotland and will be seen as being foreign.

And it will be Labour voters who think that most of all.

I did forget McGregor and Willie Whitelaw (and that after using him as an avatar for a while).

I wish those hooting for abolition of the Scotland Office would consider the costs of the HUNDREDS of amendments to existing legislation that would entail.

Remember, this is exactly the same as when Blair thought he could abolish the job of Lord Chancellor; he had to backtrack, the job still has legal existence (combined with Justice Secretary) and Ken Clarke has just taken it on.

As for replacing Trident:

- the annual costs are trivial - £2-3bn a year over 40-ish years.

- anyone with any knowledge of it knows that it's the cheapest option. Anything else costs more and isn't a reliable deterrent.

Surprised your not writing about this.

You Nats wish to destroy my country.

That is treason

_____________

You really have to explain that comment you made on the Hootsman today.

This was your original comment:

The Labour Party is to be congratulated on putting its principles ahead of being propped up by a fractious "coalition" and being beholden to a bunch of narrow, quasi-bigoted treasonous secessionists and wreckers.

Treasonous?

Dear oh dear, you've really let the side down here by revealing your own prejudices and rather stark hatred of people who disagree with you.

Very disappointing and I'm sure you feel that yourself.

It's probably best that you post a short apology on this blog and display a little humility.

You can do humility can't you?

Oh dear.

Hundreds of amendments etc. The Office of Irish Chief Secretary, an office in continued existence since 1660 and Lord Chancellor of Ireland - posts reaching backing further into antiquity than Secretary of State for Scotland were snuffed out in a few pieces of legislation in the early 1920s.

Strange that there was no Chief Secretary for Northern Ireland after 1922. You are fond of precedent are you not SM?

As I said in a post a few months ago the Scotland Secretary job should be downgraded to that of "Scotland Lieutenant" similar to the role of "Quebec Lieutenant" that operates in Canada. If that Glasgow boy had Sir John A had cooked up a Federal Minister fo Quebec, Sir Georges Cartier (the first government Quebec Lieutenant) would have slapped his friend.

The Advocate General should be an impartial person jointly appointed by the Scottish and UK governments.

Dover House should be handed over to the Scottish government and used as its official "embassy" in London (or we can have Scotland Yard back!) like the Bavarians do in Berlin:

"THE fight to hand more powers to the Scottish Parliament is to take a dramatic step forward with a move by the Lib Dems to include the SNP in the Calman Commission group examining greater home rule."

It can't be very nice for you to lose all the time.

The creeping tide is coming Sm753 and none of your desperate mis-readings of the situation will change it.

Gradualism at work, enjoy.

No worries, Muttley, I'm looking forward to the inevitable SNP catfight and split following their 2011 defeat and ejection from office.

The signals are all over the web.

You make the mistake of confusing the SNP with the movement towards independence.

It's an easy mistake to make at your age.

In the meantime however, the mythical 'pan unionist alliance' is slowly ripping itself apart with the Labour Party increasingly seen as stifling Scotland's interests in favour of their own, the Tories non-existent in Scotland (my condolences) and the Lib Dems happily facilitating devolution max, another step along the road to to full independence.

I've kept a place for you on the 'freedom bus'.

You never know, you might like the destination.
